I slid my hands into my pockets and watched Coop and Sheppard inspect the damage to my car tires.

“Who’d you piss off this time?” Coop said.

“No idea,” I said.

“You tellin’ me you can’t think of anyone—not one person?”

I could think of one person, and he just so happened to be grilling me right now.

“I assume someone’s not thrilled about me looking into Rebecca Barlow’s death and wants to make sure I know he’s keeping tabs on me.”

Coop tossed his head back and laughed. “Right, I almost forgot. Nancy Drew is on the case, folks. You better watch out.”

I wasn’t in the mood to accept his ignorant banter. Sometimes, even though I knew I should be the bigger person, I needed to be the smaller one even more.

“Can you stop giving me crap for one minute, Coop?” I asked. “Or is it too much to ask? I didn’t have to call you about this, but I did.”

“You didn’t call me,” Coop said. “You called Sheppard.”

Sheppard looked at Coop like he’d better keep his mouth shut, but Coop wasn’t one to follow orders, even when they were given by his superior.

“Well, you’ve upset someone,” Sheppard said to me. “No note or message was left?”

“The tires are the message,” I said. “Wouldn’t you agree?”

“Confusing message if you ask me,” Sheppard said. “In the middle of the day to boot. ’Course you did park around back, a rookie move to be sure. It made it easier for whoever did this to vandalize your vehicle without being seen.”

“It also means they know my car. I think that might be the point of all this—to let me know he’s watching and to show he’s handy with a knife.”

“First, you catch a man checking out what you were doing at the lake house, and now this,” Sheppard said. “You’re being followed, all right.”

I felt like hoisting my middle finger into the air. If I were being watched right now, I wanted to be clear with my own message. Instead, I showed remarkable restraint.

“The guy I saw at the lake house … I think he wanted me to see him, to know he was there, watching me. I think he knew he was far enough away to make it impossible for me to ID him.”

Coop broke his silence. “If someone did kill the Barlow woman, you shouldn’t be involved in her case any longer.”

Maybe he was right. But it was too late now.
